Thanks for the story. I also Ginga lover. I live in RSA and cannot buy this coffee there, though. I am buying it during my visits to Angola. Does anyone know are there any coffee plantations and production left around Porto-Amboim area? It used to be a large hub for the coffee export. But now the warehouses are empty and from the railroad just a monumet with the steam train was left. Alexander

Stumbled across this when doing random googling on Santa Marta and coffee. Sorry to say that this is some absolute rubbish written here. I have been to both sites and by far the coffee I got were way, way better at Cafe Bonsai than in Juan Valdez, where I several times got my milk burnt, which is a death sin when it comes to a good latte or cappuccino. At Bonsai the barista, none of them have dreads by the way and I met all of the workers and the two owners during my many visits there, made me excellent coffee whatever I ordered from their great coffee and tea menu. At one time the power went out as often in Taganga and then they obviously turned the machine off to save it from current spikes when the power comes back, might have been what happened to you guys, the machine has always been on apart from when I was there when the power went out. Apart from great coffee I must say that the homebaked stuff at Bonsai kicks Juan Valdez generic products any day, brownies, cinnamon rolls, apple muffins, cookies, all so delicious! I don't hold anything against Juan Valdez but being personally attended by superfriendly owners, espresso served in proper cups instead of paper cups and AC, free wifi, great music and the best sandwiches I have had in South America make my choice easy... Cafe Bonsai everyday! And I am not alone, just check the wall and talk to some other travellers and you will see...

I love Lion Coffee but will not frequent this store. I do not like the owner. I find him rude and insulting and it is quite unfortunate. I spend the extra money shipping the best coffee in the world directly from Hawaii because I won't give him my hard earned money and would rather give it directly to Lion Coffee themselves.

Can I make a guest post? There's a sick coffee shop next door to me here in Taipei. They already hook me up with tons of free coffee, but I'm hoping they'll treat me to free Heinekens if I can get them some global attention: http://www.h2ocity.com/greenbean/

Brasil is one of the coffee capitals of the world.

I am eagerly awaiting the Hounds' visit some time during the 2009-2010 academic year.

I will offer more photography work for the website, from whatever sites we visit here in Brasil!

Great post! I was just at Intelligentsia Venice this past weekend and noticed that they have just installed new table tops at the top of the stadium seating, so now it is actually very comfortable to work or study, or bring your laptop.
